In other words, you\u2019ll make a claim and support that claim with reasons. A claim is a stance on an issue that\u2019s not a question of fact. We argue with topics about which reasonable people can disagree. Of course, in the real world unreasonable people \u201cargue\u201d about topics all the time. Think of \u201cargue\u201d as \u201cdebate.\u201d When you make an argument, you should offer reasons to support your stance. A thesis statement is just a sentence the describes the purpose of your text. Since this assignment requires you to make an argument, your thesis should be your paper\u2019s claim. Many of you already have a thesis in your Blackboard Discussion Forum posts. For example, one of you is going to argue that offensive linemen in football deserve more respect. What does that look like as a thesis? Like this, \u201cOffensive linemen deserve more respect.\u201d It really is that simple. You can see that this isn\u2019t an issue one can just consult a source for an answer. Other players might argue that the corner position is more worthy of respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, you\u2019ll support your thesis with reasons. Reasons provide answers to the question \u201cWhy\u201d asked of your thesis. Why do offensive linemen deserve more respect? Why is cheerleading more difficult than being on a dance team? Why is hunting a good hobby? You should think of four to five answers for the \u201cwhy\u201d question. The answers will be your supporting reasons and act as topic sentences for your paper\u2019s body paragraphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are topic sentences? Topic sentences are the first sentences in a paragraph, and they should announce that paragraph\u2019s purpose. They do heavy lifting in a paper. Along with keeping your paper focused on its task, they help you stay organized. For example, consider this sentence, \u201cThe main reason cheerleading is more difficult than dancing is the pom-poms.\u201d This sentence signals what reason is being discussed, what the reason supports, and where the paragraph belongs in the paper as it\u2019s the \u201cmain\u201d reason. (The whole \u201cpom-poms make cheer difficult\u201d may not be true, but I don\u2019t know anything about cheerleading.) Strong topic sentences can help you in any writing task\u2014work on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jsaphara.com\/jcsupueblo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-good-time.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203\" width=\"351\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsaphara.com\/jcsupueblo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-good-time.jpg 225w, https:\/\/jsaphara.com\/jcsupueblo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-good-time-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jsaphara.com\/jcsupueblo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-good-time-96x96.jpg 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><figcaption>If you have good topic sentences, you&#8217;ll have a good time. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, as you\u2019re drafting the paper, RELAX. The only thing that really matters about your initial draft is that you\u2019ve made an attempt. In writing instruction, there\u2019s a famous article that reminds us that it\u2019s okay to have a \u201cshitty first draft.\u201d Just do the best that you\u2019re able to, even if that\u2019s not the best possible. You\u2019ll spend next week revising your draft.
