Writing Project One and Halloween

Hello everyone! We’ve made it through the first three weeks of the semester. On Sunday, the final version of your Writing Project One will be due. This is when the semester really gets rolling. We’ll start the materials for Writing Project Two (WP Two) on Monday, and before you know it, we’ll be half way through the semester.

Which is why I decorated my house for Halloween last weekend. Two months of decorations seems worthwhile. Plus, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Most of my friends know me as a Christmas fanatic, but in many ways Halloween is the superior holiday. First, there’s usually no family obligations to fulfill on Halloween. Sure, if you’re a parent, you may have to supervise trick or treating, but you don’t have to cook, nor attend a large meal with extended family. While I love my family, it’s also true that you can’t spell “family” without “FML.” In addition, there’s no pressure to find gifts for everyone. I like buying holiday presents, but with the crowds and the hit taken by my bank accounts, a less spendy holiday is great. Buy some candy! That’s it. Finally, it’s much easier to get into the spirit of Halloween. Turn the lights down and watch a scary movie. You can decorate as much as you wish (and I do), but it’s not required.

What does this have to do with your comp class? Hmmmm . . .

Two reasons for discussing Halloween: The first is that drafting can be a scary process for some students. Don’t stress yourself out over Writing Project One. Just finish it the best that you can and submit. If you work really hard and earn a C, then you should be proud of that C. (Now everyone is thinking, “OMG, we’re all getting C’s”) You’ll do fine. Keep the big picture in mind: if you’re completing all the homework assignments, that will boost your paper score. Plus, this paper is worth the fewest points of your three Writing Projects. As long as you submit a draft, you won’t do any heavy damage to your grade. The second reason is that in face to face classes, I tend to hit a tangent and get distracted from the main point. I need to ensure that you get the full Jason experience.
